OK. Every day I respect Dr. Tom more and more and more.
He did everything he said he was going to do. He outlined the expectations and stuck with them. If the coaches would have led NU to an 8-4 season they would still be the coaches. But they couldn't get it done. They got blown out by KU too. He also didn't contact any coaches. He stuck with his word and even said that he was thinking about keeping the current coaches during the CU game.
Also, I didn't know his philosophy about assistant coaches. It makes sense though when hearing him that everything is the responsibility of the head coach, including the defense and the special teams. I think Coach Callahan understood that but it was hard for him to make his friend make changes. Coach Callahan had to make that change though because Dr. Tom wasn't going to do it for him. I'm just surprised that Coach Callahan didn't fight for his job more but the expectations were laid out for him. It's like having a review session at your work with your boss. If you didn't reach the things that were set out for you in your goal session, why would you think that you would still have a job? Coach Callahan understood that so what more needed to be said.
So now the search is on. I think the next head coach needs to have Nebraska ties. I don't care what anyone else says. Turner Gill knows what he would be getting himself into. Same goes for Bo Pelini. Are they up for it? I don't know but I know that they understand what Nebraska is about. Coach Callahan never got it. Even one of the assistants (I'm guessing either Cosgrove or Watson) said to Dr. Tom on Saturday morning that they didn't know about the passion of Husker fans. Here is my thought at this moment (10:30 a.m.) hire Bo, he will name Marvin Sanders (an ex-Husker) as his defensive coordinator and then name Shawn Watson as offensive coordinator. The offense stays in tact and the defense gets two motivating forces!
Go Big Red!
