rhythm

I love it when I get into a rhythm. The other tough part is that I can easily be knocked out of it as well. It pertains to all aspects of my life.

But we will start with my golf game. It is a certain feeling that I get when I'm hitting the little white ball. It's hard to put a finger on it. Sometimes I will be playing and someone will ask me what they are doing wrong with their swing. I, in general, can't help them because for me it is about the rhythm. If I have my rhythm, my drives go straight as an arrow. If I have my rhythm, my irons go just the distance that they need to go with just the right trajectory. If I have my rhythm, my putting is firm and right on course. My hands go through the zone at just the right time. My body sways like to the sounds of a symphony. The sound smacks like a shotgun.

But once I lose it. I generally lose it totally and it's hard to get it back. Because then with each shot I keep pressing trying to find the right thing. I can't even write it down so I can go back to it later. It just doesn't work that way for me. And when it is in the middle of a round I might as well just stop there and find a cart to ride back to the clubhouse on.

It comes that way with writing too. Once I have the writing rhythm going the words just flow and come out and the story becomes a story instead of just facts and figures and thoughts. I feel more artistic and more accomplished. But like I said, it's with a rhythm including sights and sounds, actions and reactions.

It's that way with teaching too. I can tell within the first minutes of class if I have it that day or if I don't. I haven't quite figured out what to do for sure when I don't yet though. Usually it means I give them time on a worksheet or something. But when I'm in a rhythm I think they can tell as well because they usually ask more questions and I'm more engaging.

Of course it goes that way with running too. I can tell when my step just isn't right. I'm happy that I can run over six miles now and I need to keep building up. But I can tell within the first minute of the run if my rhythm is still there. If it's not, it is a struggle.

I have my rhythm right now!

So it begins...

My schedule starts picking up again today as the class I teach at UNL (JGen 300) starts. I'm teaching on Tuesday's and Thursday's this semester from 9:30-10:45. I hope I have a great class like last semester. We will see. This will be my third semester teaching the class so I feel a lot more comfortable heading into it. I have all of the weeks figured out and the days will be much busier because I'm trying to pack the three days into two. Maybe one of the students will bring me an apple!
