I couldn't have asked for more. What a great weekend!
Friday night kicked it off in fine style with friends and family stopping over at the house. The slip n slide broke after live five minutes but the kids still got all wet. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Some of you I hadn't seen in quite awhile and it was great to reconnect. Thanks to those that stayed with until after midnight to ring in the official birthday. We were laughing and talking and jabbering so much I didn't even realize how late it was.
On Saturday afternoon, I ran down with the in-laws in their new Ford Edge to Stockton, Kansas to hook up with even more family to play in a golf tournament in Phillipsburg, Kansas on Sunday. Saturday when I got there was awesome and then I decided to go for a run in town. Shellie helped me mark out the run and how long it was and then my niece, McKenzie, decided she wanted to ride her bike along side me. We made it nearly a third of the way around when she got too tired. It was super hot on the asphalt but with less humidity than in Lincoln. So we ran home and then I took off again to finish the route. When I got back you could say I was more than sweaty. But it was nearly time for an awesome supper! Shellie made a great tasting Seafood Boil. She puts hers into the oven where I do mine on the stove. I think I like her way better. It had king crab legs, thousands of tiger shrimp, corn on the cob, potatoes....Amazing. I ate and ate and ate and ate. Like it was my last supper or something. Then they surprised me with a chocolate birthday cake that was super moist. Just the way I like it.
After that Ron, Shellie and I went out to Webster Lake, about 10 minutes from Stockton. It was really pretty out there especially as the sun went down with pinks and blues in the sky. I met a lot of their friends and kicked back under the stars. I got a little sleepy out there though with the breeze off the lake. One of their daughters will be a senior this fall and plans on going into journalism, maybe at KU, so we talked about that for awhile. But they were a fun bunch!
Sunday morning it was time to get up early for the three-man scramble! Got the wakeup shout from Ron at 7 and then we had to leave by 7:15. That was a quick changeover and may have played a part in what happened in a matter of minutes. I thought my back seemed to be pretty stiff but I kept trying to stretch it out. But I got to the first tee and everything seemed ok as I ripped it right down the fairway. But by the second hole (we started on No. 4 of a nine-hole course), I could tell the back was giving out! I had to putt weirdly and every swing was painful. I finally starting taking some pills and then it started to come around after about six holes. So for about four holes then I was pain free! But the last few holes it came back again. I don't think I was a huge help for the team but they will used some of my drives and I made a few putts. They were great with their mid-irons. Shellie was one of the beer cart girls so she kept me going too with plenty of fluids. There were two other groups at the hole with us. Man, some of them could drive the ball! We ended up finishing third in the second flight with a final score of 62, which I think I heard them say is 2-under. We didn't bogey a hole all day.
Then we drove back to Lincoln with Kenzie, who is six. We watched cars, robots and talked and laughed. That trip went super quick. I dozed off a few times but she made sure that I stayed awake!
There you have it. A tremendous birthday weekend. I may have to add updates if I think of more things.
