Lights, camera, nametags: Thespians arrive in Lincoln

You might notice a few thousand extra people in town this week. They’re mostly young and all theatrical.

It’s that time of year: The curtain is up, the stage lights are lit and the dressing room is aflutter.

At this year’s International Thespian Festival — which runs Monday through Saturday — high school students from all over the world come together at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to strut their thespy stuff beneath the proscenium.

Just under 2,600 students and teachers from more than 200 schools are registered for the festival this week, said Kathleen Taylor, ITF marketing manager.

More than 50 productions will be presented by schools from all over North America and abroad. And the festival will offer an opportunity for stage aspirants to meet college theater program recruiters. About 60 college program recruiters will be here this week, the most ever at the festival, Taylor said.

And there’s also a full schedule of workshops presented by theatre professionals.

A few of the workshops offered:

“Brush up your British”

“Creating believable stage villains”

“Painting with people”

And our favorite: “Story! Puppets! Action!”

If you’re an aficionado of theater, you can check out the festival’s production of “Hairspray” on Tuesday.

There will be two performances of the high school production, at 3:30 and 8 p.m. at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $24 for each performance and can be purchased at the Thespian Festival office in the Steinhart Room at the Lied Center between 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

The show’s premiere will be attended by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway production. And, fun fact, Shaiman was the guy behind many of the songs in 1999’s “South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut.”

Be sure to check back throughout the week, as we mingle with visiting thespians.

So it begins...

My schedule starts picking up again today as the class I teach at UNL (JGen 300) starts. I'm teaching on Tuesday's and Thursday's this semester from 9:30-10:45. I hope I have a great class like last semester. We will see. This will be my third semester teaching the class so I feel a lot more comfortable heading into it. I have all of the weeks figured out and the days will be much busier because I'm trying to pack the three days into two. Maybe one of the students will bring me an apple!
