British speaking hosts/voice overs

This is something I really don't understand. OK. I know that some British people probably came up with the idea for American Idol but why is a British person (Simon) at the center of it all. Why choose him to be in the spot over some music executive from the United States? It's not that big of deal but I've always wondered about that.

The other thing that is bugging me is why commercials are using British voices more and more in the U.S. Has research been done to show that they sound smarter than someone from the Midwest? It kind of baffles me really. Does it make the product better if there is a British voice? Do more people go, hmmm....that guy just sounds brilliant so I'm going to buy that lawn mower!

I'm not sure where I'm headed with this. Just free flowing ideas but I heard a commercial this morning and it bugged me.

Thoughts? Ideas? Help me understand!

I expect that since Simon is the brainchild of American Idol, he gets to be in the star position just as a matter of principle. Either that, or he bullied his way in. ;-)

As to your second question, I, too, have noticed an increase in British voices in commercials. I think it does have something to do with sounding more refined and cultured. Of course, I am a sucker for a British accent. ;-)

So it begins...

My schedule starts picking up again today as the class I teach at UNL (JGen 300) starts. I'm teaching on Tuesday's and Thursday's this semester from 9:30-10:45. I hope I have a great class like last semester. We will see. This will be my third semester teaching the class so I feel a lot more comfortable heading into it. I have all of the weeks figured out and the days will be much busier because I'm trying to pack the three days into two. Maybe one of the students will bring me an apple!
