It was a great morning for a run. Brittany and I arrived a little too early but I wasn't sure exactly where it was and when I turned into Havelock we were basically there already. So we parked a few blocks away and walked up. I saw my best friend from high school, Wes, and we talked for a bit and asked him to share some cop stories. Then we spied Brittany's mom and she snapped a photo of us. There is another one of my back. Anyway, enough with the prelims. The 10K took off and so we took our spot at the front of the 3K. I felt kind of butterflyee especially when this group took off on a sprint before the 3K even started. I couldn't figure out if they were late for the 10K or what but then they just came back to the start. I guess they were warming up. I warned Brittany that maybe we should move back by the strollers or something after witnessing that but we stayed up front. They finally started the race and we took off like a shot. I felt great as we were running. We weren't being passed by many people. I wasn't sure how the course worked so I wasn't sure how to pace myself. I knew that it went in a square shape but as I ran I felt like there could be some twists or turns ahead or something. Anyway, as we made the second turn a big hill awaited us. I pulled a little bit away from Brittany, actually about 5 yards, on the big hill so I decided to push forward without her (she said I could). I ended up passing some of the people that had earlier passed me when I looked down at my watch and saw it said 8 minutes. I thought that seemed weird because that would be waaaayyy to fast of pace if the finish line was just around the next corner. So I started worrying that we had to do the course twice and that my pace was super slow. (On a funny side note, younger kids don't know how to pace themselves. It's just funny in that they sprint, sprint, sprint and then they have to stop because they get too tired. Then they sprint again before getting too tired again. I'm glad they try though but they need some training!) I was wrong and when I made the final turn right I could see the big running scoreboard ahead. I was at a pretty good sprint at the end and when I crossed I stopped my watch in 14:10. yeah for me. My goal was between 15-16 minutes and to finish in the top 100. I think I probably accomplished both but I will post official results later. Brittany got her second wind and didn't finish too much behind me. Good job, Brittany. Then we just tried to get our breath back. I found Bret's friend, Colten, and talked with him and he did well for himself too. The next race will be the Cornhusker State Games at the end of July in the Haymarket at night. It's a 5K so we will be stepping up our game. Be sure to come, have a beer and cheer us on.
Congratulations on finishing the Havelock Charity Run!
